According to recent findings of survey conducted by Computing Technology Industry Association, released in December, it seems that there is wider attempt to wrestle with Big Data instead of just talking about it. Survey has found that 72% respondents were not only satisfied with outcomes of big data projects, but their expectancy exceeded! About 75% said that benefits would be much larger if they could harness all of their data, once it has been consolidated.
And here lies main challenge – there is no enterprise wide agreement of how this consolidation should take place. Instead due to lack of data governance and appropriate policies – different departments want to do their own thing, resulting in data silos and multiple versions of “consolidated” data views. So, it seems that much more governance work is needed before big data can be tackled in more efficient way.
